What is Classical Pilates?

Pilates Instructor Tauranga

Joseph Pilates developed the system in the early 20th century and originally called his work Contrology.

“Contrology is the complete coordination of mind, body and spirit”  (JH Pilates)

“Contrology” now known as Pilates is a world-renowned, popular method of body conditioning using a series of unique movements.  The original 6 Basic Principles are  concentration, centering, control, precision, flow and breath.  The exercises combine stretching and strengthening using apparatus with resistance and mat exercises.  Using resistance rather than impact, Pilates develops muscular power and endurance providing a challenging workout for people of all ages and fitness levels as well as those rehabilitating injuries or physical conditions.  Pilates enhances the development of strength, flexibility, toning, coordination and balance, resulting in “the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily and satisfactorily performing our many varied daily tasks with zest and pleasure”  (JH Pilates)

Who is Classical Pilates for?

Classical Pilates is for everybody!….  The methods and techniques can be used at any fitness level.  Pilates is equally beneficial for elite athletes and men and women who want to enhance their flexibility and strength, and the plus 70s wanting to maintain mobility and a healthy mind-body connection.

Pilates is for real people, whatever shape or size.

Bodysense Classical Pilates Classes

We offer semi-private classes (4 – 6 per class) which include exercises on the reformer, mat and other apparatus.  The reformer will provide you with a passive and controlled resistance where benefits are achieved through body alignment, breathing and precision of movement.  The smooth and flowing movements require concentration and muscle control, which tone, lengthen and strengthen muscles without building a bulky body.  The mat is a series of floor-based exercises that are a challenging workout, as you use your own body weight as resistance. Reformer/mat workouts are essential to maximize your results.
