What is Classical Pilates?
Joseph Pilates developed the system in the early 20th century and originally called his work Contrology.
“Contrology is the complete coordination of mind, body and spirit” (JH Pilates)
“Contrology” now known as Pilates is a world-renowned, popular method of body conditioning using a series of unique movements. The original 6 Basic Principles are concentration, centering, control, precision, flow and breath. The exercises combine stretching and strengthening using apparatus with resistance and mat exercises. Using resistance rather than impact, Pilates develops muscular power and endurance providing a challenging workout for people of all ages and fitness levels as well as those rehabilitating injuries or physical conditions. Pilates enhances the development of strength, flexibility, toning, coordination and balance, resulting in “the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily and satisfactorily performing our many varied daily tasks with zest and pleasure” (JH Pilates)
