I grew to be 6’1” tall (185cm) at 13 years old and have coped with a stiff back since then. I am a keen hunter and bike-packing cyclist, and completed the 3,100km Tour Aotearoa in 2020. My wife, Meagan, suggested I join her at Bodysense Pilates in about 2018 and although I initially found the classes very challenging, the flexibility in my lower back has improved markedly.
While undertaking certain Pilates exercises, Gen has picked up that I use my strong thighs to complete certain movements, and has helped me learn the correct technique to help strengthen my core and improve my balance. I have found with periods away from Pilates (overseas trips, and now Covid lockdowns!) my back has been significantly less flexible and creates more pain.
I really encourage anyone to give Pilates a go – it may look “easy” on the surface, but once you begin to undertake the exercises and use correct technique, the change in how you do the exercises and the effect on parts of the body that are often ignored is drastic.
